From its conception, the EXR racing manager was always set up to be an algorithmic fantasy sports game that would be powered by its NFT collection. When working through how we wanted to model the game, it always came down to building a logical, common sense scoring system that prioritized simplicity, transparency and randomness over complex equations and black box AI/ML models.

An algorithm based on real racing…

For Pilots, the characteristics chosen for the game were based on what a real Pilot might need in order to succeed in a race. If you take Formula 1 as an example, there are hundreds of real life attributes drivers need to have in order to be successful on any given track. For the EXR Pilots we picked the four that we felt created a logical and layered system where the attributes all rely on each other throughout the race.

Focus:

When controlling a Racecraft a Pilot’s focus is the first attribute that allows your Racecraft to perform at its highest levels. The Focus attribute controls the randomness of your Racecrafts movements. The more Focus your pilot has, the lower the randomness, ensuring that your Racecraft will move at close to its maximum potential.

Stamina:

Like in all sports, athletes can only focus for so long before getting tired. Similarly in EXR, every Pilot’s focus is dictated by its stamina. Throughout the race your Pilot’s focus decreases based on how much stamina you have left. The lower the stamina, the more your focus depletes meaning other racers might be able to pass you in the final stages of the race. While higher levels of stamina ensure that your racer has the ability to continue performing at a high level.

Aggression:

One of the more exciting parts of racing is when a racer makes a move and overtakes another racer or hits the gas to extend their lead over others. In EXR, making that move to overtake another racer or create separation is controlled by the Pilot’s aggression. The more aggression your pilot has, the longer the overtake burst lasts, creating a larger separation from the pack. Using aggression temporarily increases your Pilots focus levels to allow your ship to burst past others but like in the real world, this comes at a cost, as each aggression move will reduce your Pilot’s stamina.

Intelligence:

Knowing when to overtake or make a move is a unique quality built into racing of all kinds. You see it every Olympics with swimmers saving their energy for the right time to make a move to surge past the pack or push to increase their lead. In EXR, Intelligence is the attribute that controls this decision making. Intelligence controls when and how your Pilot uses its aggression bursts. Pilots with higher intelligence will be able to sense what position they are in, the time in the race, the other racers’ stamina levels and ship attributes and adjust it’s probability to use aggression. The lower intelligence your racer has, the more randomness associated with aggression and so your pilot might miss the opportunity to overtake or use their aggression at the wrong times.

EXR Faction Attribute Bonus –

Building the racing algorithm with the factions in mind, the EXR Pilot attributes were also selected based on how they connect with the different stories behind each of the game’s factions: Mercs, Augs and Serfs.

Mercenaries: Aggression

The Mercs are blood thirsty guns for hire, dangerous, relentless and paid handsomely by the greed of galaxy super corps — hungry for their next battle and planetary take over. Due to being forced into battle and trained from a young age, Mercs have an advantage over the other factions with higher Aggression scores. This aggression allows them to pull further ahead of other racers in the race when overtaking or creating distance from the pack.

Augments: Intelligence

Ex-humans, casualties of war, critically injured and unable to work — now a marvel of modern biosynthetic engineering — powered by a lifetime of debt owed to the galactic tech super giant Harumi Corp who offered them a second “life.” The Augs, having been enhanced using the latest technologies, have the advantage of higher Intelligence compared to other factions. Having a higher level of intelligence allows Augs to know when to use their aggression in the race to overtake racers.

Serfs: Stamina

The Serfs are a low cost mining, demolition and transportation workforce — slaves to the galaxy mega corps, slaves to their own software, suddenly began to think for themselves after a system exploit. The Serf’s, built to be working non-stop in the most extreme environments mining rare minerals, have an advantage of higher Stamina compared to other factions. More stamina means that Serfs can keep their focus longer and pilot their Racecrafts at high levels throughout the race.

A fairer scoring system.

The pilot attributes are all scored between 0 and 100 with 100 being the highest score for an attribute. The scoring bounds of every pilot falls into a tight window between 40 and 70 that is randomly assigned during the mint. These bounds were developed based on running sensitivity testing on each attribute over tens of thousands of test races to ensure that every racer always has a chance to win a race no matter how their stack ranks against other racers. We believe this leads to a fair and more importantly fun game that has probability baked in to ensure that underdogs can always have a chance to win.

Game Rarity –

Some of you may have already noticed the “Game Ranking” or “Game Rarity” scores in the EXR Collection Viewer. These rankings are based on the total stats of a Pilot compared to the entire collection. Total stats are exactly that, a sum of all of 4 of your Pilot’s stats which are then rank ordered. Because the EXR Racing Manager was built so that no one characteristic is more important to the game than any of the others, this ranking allows you to see in aggregate where a Pilot stands.

We’ll be releasing more details on how each attribute works into the algorithm as we get closer to the release of the EXR racing manager game. Stay tuned on our Twitter and Discord for the latest.
